Because Lab Zero Games reached their requested donations for Squigly, she had been a free DLC character for all. Although she was initially included in the character roster of Skullgirls, she was replaced by Valentine due to Lab Zero wanting to have a playable villain during the game's release. In a press release posted on the Reverge Labs official website on April 22, 2011, Richard Wyckoff, CEO of the company, explained that the developers sought out Yamane because they "knew her mixture of haunting gothic themes, jazz and rock would lend itself perfectly to Skullgirls' 'Dark Deco' style." According to Peter Bartholow, then the lead designer of Skullgirls, "concept art of the stages and some story background" was presented to Yamane to make the first track of the game and define the rest of the soundtrack. Squigly is a DLC character for Skullgirls Encore. In the video, Yamane expressed that she "experimented with the rhythm and different sounds to try to heighten the impact of the unique art" when Reverge requested her to make the music of the game "jazzy". On April 17, 2011, Reverge Labs uploaded a video to YouTube announcing that Michiru Yamane was working on the Skullgirls score.
